"U.S. pressures Sudan"
UNITED NATIONS -- The United States threatened sanctions against Sudan if it doesn't make significant progress in arresting marauding Arab militias within 30 days, in a revised U.N. resolution circulated Thursday.Secretary of State Colin Powell met U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan for the second time in three weeks to step up pressure on Sudan to end the 15-month conflict and escalating humanitarian crisis in the western Darfur region. The conflict in the vast region has killed up to 30,000 people, forced more than 1 million to flee their homes, and left 2.2 million in desperate need of food and medicine.
