Re: obeah
In Response To: obeah ()

For the most part, Rastafari is against all Kongo and Orisha religions, and usually intolerant of their ideas. I am not well informed of the collective consciousness in Guyana however in Jamaica as throughout the Black Diaspora it seems the urban population regards all Kongo and Orisha religions lightly as well. It’s not correct to say that Obeah is the “con” side, or even the “dark” side of... let’s Rastafari as Leonard Howell himself reportedly stated. Obeah has a con side if the Obeah person chooses, and by many practitioners it is perceived to be just as serious as Dahomean Vodoun, Candomble de Angola, Jamaican Kumina and other Kongo derived traditions of Africa, the Caribbean and Americas which maintained closer ties with L'AFRIK GUINE (indigenous practices) and use less or no Christian iconography. There is in my view far more "con" activities carried out in the name of the "holy" Church than in Kongo and Orisha religions. As for these indigenous traditions, they have their own agendas and it is convenient to point to another tradition to place blame for "sorcery" or "fraud". When people condemn them, they are condemning an entire culture, in essence. This is profoundly miserable.
