With over 400 activities, Birmingham’s 6th Black History Month is the biggest in the UK. Celebrating Caribbean, Asian and African cultures, both past and present and runs from 1st October 2003, through to November at venues throughout Birmingham.

Birmingham Libraries, Museums, Arts centres and a host of other city venues will house everything from films, exhibitions, comedy, and more. The festivities commemorate the struggles, contribution and achievements of Black people.

Councillor Ian Ward says,

“Black History Month celebrates Caribbean, Asian and African history and culture. The festival is designed to bring all communities together. It aims to entertain people and inform them about the contribution that Black people have made and are continuing to make towards Birmingham becoming a more vibrant and culturally diverse place to live in and visit”.

This year’s Black History Month is jointly organised by the Black History Foundation and Birmingham City Council. They have worked with organisers in the Black community to build on the success of previous years and make this year’s festival better than ever.

Dr Roi Kwabena, a former Birmingham poet laureate who recently won the L.I.T.E. (Love Is True Expression) award for ‘Outstanding Service to the Community’, Terri Walker the 21st century singing soul-diva and MOBO award nominee and Jagjit Singh the ‘ghazal’ master are just a few of those who will be whetting appetites during this period.

Keith Harris (chair of the Black History Month Foundation) says,

“The Black History Month generates greater awareness of the history of Black people and with over 400 events this year we aim to make this years celebration a huge success”.
