I'm a white middle class youth. My father teaches history at Georgia State University, and my mother works for the Society of Biblical Literature, a non-profit press that publishes books about religion and the ancient Near East. I'm definitly middle class, but not super wealthy. And my folks never threw money my way. I'm definitly in concurrance with the statement that the parents are throwing money at their kids instead of raising them. I was not raised like that. My parents and brother and I sit and eat every meal together, attend Quaker Meeting together, discuss politics, and have fun together. A big problem with these hippie kids running to their farms in the hills is the naive belief that they're accomplishing something. Yes, they may be making their lives better, but not anyone elses. It's a really ignorant view of how things are changed. In my eyes, that flight is really more of an escape from the responsibilty that comes with wealth. Give thanks that they're leading an Ital, organic, intentional lifestyle, even if it's not productive for the greater good. Give thanks that they're not participating actively in their parent's Babylon. Also, being an honest surgeon or doctor or lawyer is naught to be ashamed of. If yo've worked hard and honestly and made your wealth, then you're not a part of babylon. So don't automatically knock certain professions.
Raspect,
Joshua
